Women's hands choosing accessoriesWhether you are in between homes, own a small jewelry business, or are just looking for a place to store your jewelry, it’s important to make sure it’s properly prepared for storage to avoid rusting, breaking, theft, misplacement, and more. Here’s how to prepare your jewelry for storage and how climate controlled storage with Go Store It can help.

Step One: Prepare your Jewelry

While it might be tempting to take the easy way out and just throw all of your jewelry in a box and call it a day, that’s not the best way to go about jewelry preservation and storage. First, you’ll want to take an inventory of all of your jewelry to help keep track of every piece. Next, evaluate all of your jewelry and determine if you need to make any repairs. Some jewelry stores offer free repairs in their warranty packages, but you can also find places that repair jewelry for as low as $20. After all of your jewelry is repaired, it’s time to clean and refresh them. Similar to repairs, jewelry stores often offer cleaning services that will leave your jewelry squeaky clean. There are also solutions and polishes you can purchase as well as DIY methods using toothpaste, baking soda, and dish soap that will help get all of the dirt and grime off your jewelry. Make sure that your jewelry is fully dried after cleaning before you store them.

Step Two: Use the Proper Containers

Jewelry is best stored in dark and dry containers. That’s why when you purchase jewelry pieces, they typically come in a box lined with cotton or a felt bag. The cotton and felt are used to help keep them dry and free of excess moisture. If possible, store each piece in its original box. If that’s not possible, there are many different types of jewelry storage containers you can buy that will get the job done.  Everyone dreads the task of having to untangle necklace chains, bracelets, and earrings from each other, so make sure you store each piece separately from each other.

Step Three: Insure Your Jewelry

Theft is definitely the worst-case scenario when storing your jewelry, but it is something that still happens, unfortunately. If you have high-value jewelry that is irreplaceable, we recommend storing them in a safe deposit box at a bank. Otherwise, it’s best to insure your jewelry using homeowners insurance, jewelry insurance, or self storage insurance.

Step Four: Rent an Affordable Climate Controlled Storage Unit
